Crank Up the Music!

4 Reasons Why Music is Good for Your Health

Lacey Talaska, Reporter

Have you ever woken up feeling dreary or unmotivated? So, you turn on your favorite song and your mood makes a comeback. There’s a reason for that. Research has shown that music can benefit our mental and physical health in many ways.

  • Your body releases endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that are released from your body when listening to music or singing. They help uplift your mood  and can also help you relax by lowering the level of cortisol in your body, which is a hormone created by stress.

  • Music can motivate. It can boost your physical performance and help you get in the mood to study. Music can cause the brain to release a chemical called dopamine that works to bring on motivation and set a goal-oriented behaviour. Faster music can help you concentrate better.

  • It can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. When feeling down, listening to music can pump you up!  It can also open the door for relaxation. Slower music can quiet your mind and unwind your muscles.

  • It can raise your confidence. Confidence is built when working in a musical environment. Although it does not happen immediately, success comes easily to those who are calm and collected.

So, when you are feeling down, stressed, or unmotivated, go ahead and blare that music to stay healthy!
