How Social Media Affects Mental Health

Olivia Smith

People of all ages are influenced by all platforms of social media. I truly believe the more you are exposed to social media, the poorer your mental health will become. This is because people are consumed by it day in and day out. You have so many options like Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Vsco, Youtube, etc. On all of these apps, you will find people sharing their daily lives. It becomes addicting to check in with someone and look at their account or profile to see a recent post.  I know many people, especially younger kids, comparing themselves to what they see on the internet. They are constantly looking for new ways to improve themselves based on others. They will see someone and think their lifestyle is perfect, but in reality, the background or behind the scenes that the public doesn’t see could be a complete disaster. Overall, I think social media has changed so many people’s mindsets, and with a little time spent away from technology, you could improve yourself more than you think. Stopping yourself from relying on social media to make you happy and being who you are instead will boost your self esteem and confidence so much!!
