Cheerful cooking

The Alpena High School Cheerleading squad, coached by Angel Howard, was recently cooking at the Art in the Loft in the Center Building in downtown Alpena.
THe basic goal of the event at Art in the Loft is to inspire and provide healthy cooking skills to the athletes of AHS or “the cats in the kitchen”.
According the Howard, as reported on True North Radio Network News, “Cooking today provided the girls with the opportunity to work together as a team on a different level to practice and learn cooking skills,” said Coach Angel Howard. “It was nice to see the girls try new foods and cook food a different way.”
The cheerleaders learned to make Deconstructed Pesto Lasagna, Sweet Potato Black Bean Chili and Broccoli with Orange Glaze using techniques such as sautéing, blanching, and chopping.
This cooking opened new, healthy foods to the cheerleaders that they may have not liked previously. Hannah Pashley commented that she does not like peppers and onions usually but “together in the recipe they tasted great.”
“Cats in the kitchen” dips into the Wildcat Training Table offered to Alpena High School Student Athletes during their away games.
This session was supported by Michelle Gauthier, food service director, and Melanie Vallimont, food service supervisor at MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena, and Denise Cooper, Art in the Loft’s Culinary Arts Kitchen coordinator.
