National Walkout

On March 18th students across the nation are expected to walk out of the classrooms for 17 minutes, a minute for every life lost in the Parkland School Shooting beginning at 10:00 a.m. in every timezone.

AHS went above and beyond in the March 18th walkout by setting up a place for the students in the school gym. The gates to the student parking lot were locked at 9:50am and at 9:57 student were given the option to head to the gym, at 10:00 the rally and letter writing event began and lasted to 10:17, from 10:17 to 10:20 and at 10:30 the student lot gates re open.

In the AHS gym there was tables set up along the railing of gym 1 and 2 and tables across the back doors of gym 2 and 3. The bleachers from gym 1 were put down and a microphone was set up.

There was staff assigned to each house in the school along with wandering staff to watch over the rest of the school while to rally took place in the gym where numerous staff were stationed.

The AHS rally had a fair turnout, one student said it was a great opportunity to show their support and give their opinion on the events that took place on February 14th. Many other students said they did not participate because they either didn’t want to change their schedule or didn’t believe in the reasons that they were protesting.
