Fans of the sensational Kpop boy group, SHINee, shared a memorable and sentimental day on Jan. 11, 2021. Shawols (SHINee fans) all around the world were celebrating the day that former member, Jonghyun, released his solo debut mini album, ‘Base’. The album has previously made multiple achievements, such as #1 on the Gaon Album Chart, #1 on Billboard World Albums, received an album bonsang (an award a step down from a daesang) at the Golden Disc Awards, and has sold 99,864 copies.

The day was extremely emotional for all SHINee and Jonghyun fans. Kim Jonghyun, former main vocalist of SHINee, committed suicide on Dec. 18 2017 by carbon monoxide poisoning. He had rented an apartment in Cheongdam, and later that evening, was discovered unconscious in the apartment. He was taken to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and was given CPR until his death was announced at 6:32 p.m. Jonghyun’s funeral was held in Asan Medical Center‘s funeral hall in Pungnam-dong, Seoul, starting the afternoon of Dec. 19.

On Dec. 21, following the public funeral, Jonghyun was moved from the hospital to a private funeral attended only by his family and close friends, and was then laid to rest in an undisclosed location. Jonghyun’s death was sudden and shocked fans everywhere, with no one having any idea why until his suicide note was released by one of his close friends, revealing that his death was linked to severe depression and struggles with his career.

After Jonghyun’s death, the hashtags “#StayStrongShawols” and “#YouDidWellJonghyun” became trending topics on Twitter. On Dec. 30, 2017, Jonghyun debuted on Billboard‘s Social 50 chart at number two with 425,000 Wikipedia views, a boost of 17,974 percent. Jonghyun’s death opened discussions about the harsh and competitive nature of the entertainment business in South Korea, as well as mental health.
